Unfortunately se6ast1an is busy herding sick cats ...
16:02
Bertl
considering that the first evaluations are up (GSoC 2020) I presume every student wants to report what they did last week :)
16:02
Bertl
so please just drop me a short message to get the order right.
16:03
Bertl
everybody else interested in reporting progress or any other news, please let me know as well
16:06
Bertl
so let's start with a report from metal_dent[m] then
16:07
Bertl
metal_dent[m]: channel is yours ...
16:07
metal_dent[m]
hi!
16:07
metal_dent[m]
so as the first phase is almost over now and my major task for this was to flash firmware on pic16s using pic32
16:08
metal_dent[m]
and it's almost done now, the host PC script is ready which is in python (the one i reported about last week)
16:10
metal_dent[m]
to receive/send data from host via USB, BL has some methods send/receive methods which i tested last week, then i created a method called ProcessCommand() which processes the string commands received from the host and takes action accordingly
16:11
metal_dent[m]
now the part of the task which is left is to actually "write" (or read) the firmware on pic16, the read/write methods are already present in the ICSProgrammer class i just need to use them
16:12
metal_dent[m]
it'll be done in the next days (if i don't encounter any other obstacle)
16:12
metal_dent[m]
also i'm working on my report for the first evaluation and will discuss with BAndiT1983
16:13
metal_dent[m]
that's it from my side!
16:13
Bertl
sounds great! thanks!
16:13
Bertl
any special issues you were facing this week? any new discoveries?
16:14
metal_dent[m]
the bootloader hex has some problems and i still can't use it for testing, so at the moment i'm using firmware code to do test my code
16:15
Bertl
okay, tx!
16:15
metal_dent[m]
some other small issues too but i can't recall them atm
16:15
Bertl
no problem
16:15
Bertl
bluez_[m]: the channel is yours now ...
16:16
bluez_[m]
tx.. hi everyone!
16:16
bluez_[m]
so last week i spent all of my time debugging and fixing my code (to upload firmware into mxo2's sram)
16:17
bluez_[m]
i really did not expect it to take a whole week but here we are
16:18
bluez_[m]
so i changed a lot of things and tried many combinations, to do exactly what our python scripts were doing as they worked but my driver did not
16:19
bluez_[m]
but nothing seemed to work...I and Bertl then prepared and compared debug messages from my driver and the script and most relevant things were matching
16:19
bluez_[m]
Bertl then pointed out that the jtag command for mxo2 used to upload to sram actually expects a compressed bitstream
16:20
bluez_[m]
we are not sure yet why an uncompressed still worked with the scripts
16:20
Bertl
I have a good idea here btw
16:20
Bertl
more on that later :)
16:20
Bertl
please continue :)
16:20
bluez_[m]
but as Bertl suggested the scripts could have 'accidentally' worked due to various reasons...nd hence no point in me trying to recreate that 'accident'...
16:21
bluez_[m]
so we created a compressed bitstream and tried to adapt it to our scripts and it worked!
16:21
bluez_[m]
so now my task is to try the same with my driver using compressed bitstream and hope it works...
16:21
bluez_[m]
which will accomplish my task of this phase
16:22
bluez_[m]
<Bertl "I have a good idea here btw"> would love to hear it :)
16:22
bluez_[m]
so that's it from my side!
16:22
Bertl
thanks a bunch! appreciated!
16:22
Bertl
well, the explanation is probably quite simple
16:22
Bertl
when programming the flash memory in the MachXO2
16:23
Bertl
we upload two memory areas, the 'config flash' and the 'user flash'
16:23
Bertl
and most likely, the config flash simply contains the compressed image as well with some padding
16:24
Bertl
so we end up loading the relevant parts into SRAM as well
16:24
Bertl
(should be easy to verify)
16:24
Bertl
anyway, good work!
16:24
bluez_[m]
thanks!
16:25
Bertl
the next report will be from preetimenghwani[ ... please go ahead
16:25
preetimenghwani[
Hello Everyone!
16:25
preetimenghwani[
So the last week i completed the test framework, there were a few issues related to writers and LUTs, but these are resolved now. And the data is perfectly written into the memory. Here is the link to repository:
16:25
preetimenghwani[
https://github.com/preetimenghwani/axiom-firmware/tree/pixel_remapdev/peripherals/soc_main
16:26
preetimenghwani[
Also I have prepared the report for first evaluation ---> https://drive.google.com/file/d/13UWwFNSNjEYWbBdZ303DdAoCbnLWn_8s/view?usp=sharing
16:26
preetimenghwani[
Also bertl explained me about a few commands in the script earlier which i have documented here ---> https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ACXKYQmsmh8qwwVdYr6DJWM2fGpzeFlKHV_fyfK4_jQ/edit?usp=sharing
16:26
preetimenghwani[
I have also prepared a small presentation about my code.
16:26
preetimenghwani[
Thats it from me :)
16:27
Bertl
great! can you comment quickly on the issues you had with the LUTs?
16:27
Bertl
(and how those got resolved)
16:29
Bertl
btw, report looks nice at first glance! good work there!
16:30
preetimenghwani[
Yes, it was required to disable the LUTs, the script available for that was axiom_linear_conf.sh but it did not work, so Bertl helped me in resolving that and a new scipt named axiom_linear_identity.sh was made. The values in the LUTs needed to be the address values shifted left by four.
16:31
preetimenghwani[
Thanks Bertl
16:31
Bertl
so to clarify, as this might be interesting for other parties as well:
16:32
Bertl
the axiom_linear_conf.sh sets defaults for the linearization LUTs in the input pipeline
16:32
Bertl
and it was kind of assumed, that the default would be a 1:1 mapping (identity) for those LUTs
16:32
samant[m]
left the channel
16:32
WalterZimmermann
left the channel
16:32
chelsea[m]
left the channel
16:33
Bertl
turns out that the default is basically a -1/16th offset to the identity
16:33
Bertl
which basically results in a -1 for each ADC value
16:33
Bertl
the new axiom_linear_identity.sh works around this by setting the proper LUT values for a 1:1 mapping
16:34
Bertl
megora: you're next, please take the 'stage' for your report ...
16:34

16:34
megora
Hello everyone! The last week I was working on developing the controller and pairing the existing eMMC emulator with my code.
16:36
megora
he issues are that this emulator is developed with the older eMMC protocol standard, so it's not suitable to test data transmission with higher frequencies.
16:36
megora
*the issues
16:37
megora
Now I'm considering if it's reasonable to try updating this emulator to work with higher speeds
16:39
megora
That's all from my side.
16:39
Bertl
thanks! appreciated!
16:40
Bertl
vup would also like to give us a bit of information ...
16:41
Bertl
vup: please go ahead, channel is yours ...
16:41
vup
Yes, the last week uni keep me quite busy unfortunately
16:42
vup
however, I finally rebased the PR that integrated the control daemon and the webui with fw 2.x
16:42
vup
https://github.com/apertus-open-source-cinema/axiom-firmware/pull/127
16:42
vup
So after some final tests that is ready to get merged
16:42
Bertl
great news!
16:43
vup
Also I started working on a way to make it possible to always boot a know working ("golden") version of the firmware
16:44
vup
The main idea is, to have a known working linux kernel and a known working filesystem state and then if necessary trigger a boot from these
16:44
vup
This is going to use a btrfs subvolume for the golden root filesystem and make all user modifications go into a snapshot of that
16:45
vup
The current state is, that the root filesystem was switched over to btrfs and the subvolumes / snapshots are already created
16:45
vup
also fw2.x now buils a static btrfs-progs and busybox
16:46
vup
so the only missing piece is now writing a initramfs init script that actually makes it possible to boot into the golden version
16:46
vup
you can find more details here: https://github.com/apertus-open-source-cinema/axiom-firmware/pull/158
16:46
vup
that's all from me
16:47
Bertl
thanks a bunch!
16:47
Bertl
now se6ast1an relayed a few pices of information as well which I will now reproduce here ...
16:48
Bertl
panintended reported that there have been no significant updates since last week
16:49
Bertl
the brand new and long awaited AXIOM Team Talk 15.4 about Optical Filters and Firmware 2.0 has been released
16:50
Bertl
se6ast1an also reports that the Hub Beta is oeprational again and the weird artefacts are no more
16:51
Bertl
and that the first UV/IR cutoff filter was glued into the filter holder. yay!
16:51
Bertl
now I was mostly busy with preparations for GSoC2020 first evaluations as you can imagine
16:52
Bertl
and a camera test setup at the Kuffner observatory in Vienna where we installed an Axiom Beta at the great refractor for future observations
16:53
Bertl
first test images have been acquired (will make some available over the next days) and data analysis has already begun
16:54
Bertl
unfortunately apoorva_arora and Dest123 seem to be 'away' so no reports from them today
16:55
Bertl
that's it from my side ... if anybody else has something interesting to report, please go ahead, now is the right time!
16:55
Bertl
otherwise the meeting is concluded and we will now focus on the first evaluation.
16:56
Bertl
thanks everybody for your contributions!
