no, not at all

if you consider how many parties get their cut for doing almost nothing in a "western" country, you understand why it is so cheap in china

but i still don't think that would put a DSLR at less than $50, not that china are selling $50 DSLRs

not that the sensors would be bigger than a cm

although i'll probably wait for the cassette tape version

Bertl, i want to build my own Time Base Corrector

although my skills in electronics are minimal, but it doesnt look too difficult :P famous last words

and the chips i'm looking at also do 3D comb filtering

i bought the cheapest TBC i could find which was 300 dollars, so not actually cheap, and it was awful, ruined all the contrast, blew out the brightness

well i'm looking at (i've emailed them some questions which they seemed to not want to answer through an email, they wanted to call my company or university :P ) but the video decoder chip ADV7800, i'm not sure if it's a full frame TBC, but i assume it is given the external memory it needs

and then i havent figured out which video encoder, probably the ADV7344, but i havent looked at price, so if not that the adv7341 or adv7340 are the only other ones with enough pixel inputs i think, their website tables of features are awfully laid out

well i have the black magic intensity pro, which has component input 10bit 4:2:2, so i think i have to re-encode it

i'd be happy to skip the re-encoding step if i knew how :P

do you think that ADV7800 can be fed into HDMI if its outputting YCrCb

it'd probably be a better idea than converting it back to analogue

my approach (but I'm a digital kind of guy :) would be to digitize everything at high datarate and do the rest in software :)

yeah, how would you go about digitizing something from composite?

particularly when the time base can be so off that frames get dropped constantly

but after that, the adv7800 does the processing on the digital data

so using a 12 or maybe even 14bit ADC at the proper clock rate would give you great data to crunch on (in software)

my capture card can only do 10bit

and you get frame drops and syncing problems?

i was getting dropped frames, however they stopped after a firmware update, at least on one VHS tape i tried, but there is still time base problems as the picture warps a bit

couldnt this be a vcr problem. can you test another vcr or playback device?

the fix to the problem is to get a VCR with a TBC built in, but they cost as much as a TBC

this is something i've been trying to do for the past 2 years :P i've gone through a lot of different things, and i am quite anal lol

Bertl, definitely, the tape i'm testing on is one that I shot something on that I don't care much for

the tape has been sitting around and it didnt have combing in it before, but now it does, so its developed combing from not even being played, unles im getting interference somewhere

but the time base still wouldnt be right

with an ADC and directly to some memory

at 150MHz it will take about 200 megabyte per second

i actually really like the idea

not even a terrabyte per hour

i think i might be able to do that YCC through hdmi though

probably the most difficult part will be ensuring equal track lengths to the ram

four, 10bit ADCs

and yes, it looks like the adv7800 can do the retiming for HDMI out

i think this will be my best bet
