I'd suggest, we do that with a stand-alone version in mind e.g. some 'cheap' xilinx? FPGA which can be used as dummy sensor (maybe even in the same socket, although I think that will be trickier)

though that would be quite easy to do as a wrapper around the non-standalone module

that would probably cost a fraction of a fully assembled adapter board plus sensor

I'd think that a low grade (quality) sensor and a sensor board will be cheaper than a simulated one, depending of course how many of them we need.

Though a simulated sensor might be easier for unit tests, and for reducing barrier of entry for new developers.
