Hey Bertl
17:47
jjshawver
(james here)
17:47
jjshawver
managed to get the beta to use the hdmi via the kick_manual.sh script
17:48
jjshawver
however, the camera wasn't taking images and streaming through the HDMI. all I was seeing was a light purple screen with the Axiom logo in the bottom left
17:49
jjshawver
did I miss something for getting the camera to start taking pictures?
17:50
se6astian
hi james!
17:50
jjshawver
hi sebastian!
17:50
se6astian
the live video feed should be running automatically on boot up - unless herbert made some customizations just for your firmware
17:50
se6astian
hdmi does not display anything before running kick_manual.sh?
17:51
jjshawver
I can give it a shot again to double check really quick. one second.
17:51
jjshawver
I'm not sure if I checked without the script yet
17:55
Bertl
Hey jjshawver!
17:56
Bertl
what do the light (red, green, blue) do when you boot your AXIOM Beta?
17:56
Bertl
*lights
17:56
jjshawver
seems like it likely is a focus issue
17:56
jjshawver
currently don't have a lens in it yet, which likely is the problem.
17:56
jjshawver
still waiting on one coming in
17:57
jjshawver
put my hand in front of the camera to kill the light, and the background went from light purple to black
17:57
Bertl
ah, yes, well, that is expected
17:57
Bertl
you won't get a picture without lens system :)
17:57
jjshawver
@sebastian -> there isn't any output to the hdmi until the kick_manual.sh
17:57
jjshawver
haha. yes. silly me
17:58
Bertl
that's fine as well, the autostart is disabled
17:58
jjshawver
the manual kick off isn't a problem either
17:58
Bertl
there are two scripts, one is called kick.sh
17:58
Bertl
and the other one is called halt.sh
17:58
jjshawver
ah. ok
17:58
jjshawver
any tips on flashing the github code on there? that'll be the true first test
17:58
Bertl
if you check them with less/car/vi, you will see that they have an exit 0 in the beginning
17:59
jjshawver
will have to wait for the lens before I get there. (smart to verify what I should be getting before flashing)
17:59
Bertl
this disables the auto execution of kick_manual.sh/halt_manual.sh
17:59
jjshawver
ah. ok. that makes sense
17:59
Bertl
the first step you should do is backup your SD card :)
18:00
jjshawver
haha. ok. was planning on just keeping a golden copy as well.
18:00
jjshawver
have a couple micro sd cards floating around
18:00
Bertl
the next step is to get the Xilinx tools working
18:01
Bertl
once that is done, you can grab the github sources and build a new firmware image
18:03
jjshawver
ok. I believe I have the Xilinx tools working already. managed to get that done at least before the camera was here
18:03
jjshawver
:)
18:04
jjshawver
was there any particular reason you guys went with arch linux instead of either android or ubuntu?
18:04
Bertl
excellent, give it a try then, clone the github tree and run the commands specified in the top.vhd comment
18:05
Bertl
ubuntu is quite heavy and android is not really open
18:05
jjshawver
mind defining the way you meant "open" there?
18:05
jjshawver
meaning to the user, or via source?
18:07
jjshawver
http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Building+Android+BSP+on+ZC702
18:07
Bertl
ever tried building your android system from scratch?
18:08
jjshawver
can't say I have, although there would be some great perks if we could get it working
18:08
Bertl
like?
18:09
jjshawver
general software. OTA updates, lots of already existing camera apps for point and shoot, and an easy to use UI
18:09
Bertl
we don't have any framebuffer at the moment?
18:10
jjshawver
that's fair.
18:10
Bertl
so a GUI centric system without a GUI :)
18:10
Bertl
but please don't let me keep you from trying/doing that :)
18:10
jjshawver
haha. well. I was hoping to try out that LCD route
18:11
Bertl
just for us, it was the simplest to install a well maintained distro like arch
18:11
Bertl
which also brings all the updates, etc
18:11
jjshawver
makes sense. pacman is pretty slick as well
18:12
Bertl
for the LCD route, you probably want to find a nice LCD which supports 1-4 LVDS channels
18:12
Bertl
which might be possible to attach via the east shield
18:12
jjshawver
yeah. been having trouble finding a somewhat high res small LCD.
18:13
Bertl
3-4" should be available at up to full HD
18:13
Bertl
it's more finding 'the right' one
18:13
jjshawver
yeah.
18:14
jjshawver
assuming the shield pinouts / ucf info is somewhere on the wiki?
18:14
se6astian
new article released: https://www.apertus.org/axiom-beta-uhd-raw-mode-explained-article-may-2016
18:15
Bertl
jjshawver: I don't think we have it at the wiki yet, but it is definitely on the schematics for mainboard and the debug shield
18:15
jjshawver
ok sounds good. thanks for the pointer
18:16
Bertl
and do not hesitate to ask me for help with a potential LCD candidate
18:16
jjshawver
will look into that and hopefully get back to you guys on progress after the lens comes in :)
18:16
Bertl
while it is not our main focus, I'm pretty sure many folks are interested
18:16
jjshawver
and I'll likely take you up on that :)
18:16
jjshawver
agreed
18:17
Bertl
you can go old-fashioned and grab a piece of cardboard and make a tiny hole into it ...
18:18
jjshawver
haha. yeah. that would work too
18:18
Bertl
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura
18:18
jjshawver
anyway. gotta run. will check back in a couple days. thanks for the pointer :)

Turns out Carl Zeiss made photomultiplier tubes.
18:41

What's even more fun, they made them for radiation detection.
