Bertl
morning folks!
15:11
Millie_
Hello how is the data word can be adjusted (bitslip)? i dont understand it
15:16
Bertl
hey Millie_!
15:17
Bertl
let's assume there is a bitstream on the input consisting of 8 bit words (data)
15:17
Bertl
...00001111000011110000111100001111...
15:17
Bertl
now there are several ways to 'read' this as 8bit words
15:18
Bertl
for example:
15:18
Bertl
...000|01111000|01111000|01111000|01111...
15:18
Bertl
or
15:18
Bertl
...0|00011110|00011110|00011110|0001111...
15:19
Bertl
now if we 'know' the data currently sent is a specific pattern, like for example 0xF0 then we can 'adjust' the deserializer to match that
15:19
Bertl
...0000|11110000|11110000|11110000|1111...
15:20
Bertl
this is typically done with a so caled 'bitslip' operation which basically drops one bit from the input stream
15:21
Bertl
depending on how many bits you are off, you repeat this 'operation' to align the captured word with the expected pattern
15:24
Millie_
In that example ihave to drop 3 zeros to match that pattern?
15:24
Bertl
you drop 3 bit, yes, doesn't need to be zeroes :)
15:26
Millie_
Should i consider that the bitslip is an input signal to my component
15:26
Millie_
Or i will calculate that shift
15:26
Bertl
I presume you picked the VHDL challenge task 1?
15:27
Millie_
Yes iam in task 1 vhdl sorry i didnt mention that :)
15:28
Bertl
no problem, there you do not need to worry about the shift, just provide an input to 'drop' a bit
15:30
Millie_
Should it be the least or the most significant bit
15:31
Millie_
That will be dropped
15:34
Millie_
Can i ask another question?
15:41
Dev_

15:43
Bertl
LSB or MSB depends on the interpretation of the word
15:43
Bertl
you can only drop 'a' bit in a stream of bits
15:43
Bertl
and yes, ask away, that's what we are here for
15:45
Millie_
Great :)
15:46
Millie_
How i will write a serdes code and i can use existing hardened units like DDR or SERDES
15:46
Millie_
?
15:47
Millie_
Should i use ip cores
15:49
Bertl
you can use hardened IP, i.e. elements or primitives available on a specific hardware (e.g. 7Series or MachXO2)
15:50
Bertl
as it is all about FOSS/OH do not use anything you do not have the source for
15:52
Millie_
Ok thank you :)
15:52
Bertl
you're welcome!
