FergusL
hi again here
01:33
FergusL
exciting backlog about profiling
01:34
FergusL
I can help as well !
01:34
FergusL
at least I'm willing too
01:34

01:35
FergusL
aren't the raw files enough right now ? that simply need to be dumped as greyscale images in "precise" formats
01:41
FergusL
troy_s: thanks for the Argyll links

hello
02:38
Bertl
wb gcolburn!
02:39
gcolburn
I'm trying to work on the camera calibration
02:39
gcolburn
I think we are going to need a new shot where we can crop out the columns with the defects
02:39
gcolburn
on the left side of the sensor
02:40
gcolburn
looks like the defects go through half of the first column of patches
02:41
Bertl
http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/AXIOM/RAW/IT8_incand.png
02:41
Bertl
I don't think they cover any relevant area, no?
02:43
Bertl
i.e. if they confuse the software, a copy/paste should do the trick
02:43
gcolburn
true
02:44
gcolburn
there is a file that tells the calibrations software where the patches are on an IT8 chart. so if it looks at the overlapping defects the average would come out wrong
02:45
Bertl
yeah, so probably the best approach is to break it down into RGGB and simply fix the B by copy/pasting the 2nd block over the third
02:46
gcolburn
that could work
02:47
gcolburn
the software requires a debayered tiff though, so copy/paste could work
02:47
gcolburn
I'm getting stuck with an error from Argyll and haven't figured it out yet
02:49
Bertl
it might be looking for the markers on the leftmost white bar and above
02:52
gcolburn
it looks like its finding the patches okay
02:52
gcolburn
it outputs a diagnostic image with labels that should match up with each row/column
02:52
gcolburn
the error I get later is: "colprof: Error - Input file doesn't contain keyword COLOR_REPS"
03:00
Bertl
okay
03:03
gcolburn
i think I'll have to search through their source code to figure out what's missing. searching hasn't helped too much

hello Bertl

hi folks
12:35
FergusL
did someone else took a look at the links troy_s posted here yesterday ?
12:35
FergusL
they are very interesting, about camera profiling

on a related note, can someone point me to a doc which explains the format of the .raw8/.raw16 files here http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/AXIOM/RAW/ ?
12:36
FergusL
<troy_s1> gcolburn: Here is another link using Argyll http://stephenstuff.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/digital-camera-profiling-with-raw-therapee-and-argyll-cms/

Bertl
http://stephenstuff.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/digital-camera-profiling-with-raw-therapee-and-argyll-cms/
12:37
FergusL
it's a binary raw file
12:37
FergusL
basically 16 bits values following each other
12:37
FergusL
for each pixel
12:37
FergusL
not debayered, of course
12:37
intracube
and as this is the raw data, it would follow the pixel layout of the sensor?
12:37
intracube
right
12:37
FergusL
yes
12:38
FergusL
it is padded, though
12:38
intracube
so twice as many green photosites as R, B ?
12:38
Bertl
yup
12:38
FergusL
yep
12:38
FergusL
I made a dumb python script that debayers and dumps to the format of your choice (almost anything)
12:39
Bertl
recent .raw8/.raw16 append the sensor registers at the end
12:39
FergusL
gcolburn also made one that dumps the raw to dng
12:42
FergusL
has anyone uploaded a good quality debayered 16bits tiff from the IT8 shot ?
12:44
Bertl
I don't think so
12:46
FergusL
hm hm
12:47

Bertl: sorry for the newbie question, what do you mean by sensor registers?
13:19
Bertl
the sensor has 128 registers to configure how an image is captured
13:19
Bertl
those are 16 bit registers, so 256 bytes are added at the end of newer .raw* files
13:21
intracube
ah ok
13:22
intracube
thanks
13:23
Bertl
you're welcome!
13:30
FergusL
might be useful to have a script that reads the registers off the raw files
13:31
Bertl
reading them can be done with dd, interpreting them would be useful
13:31
Bertl
but I suggested that a few weeks (months?) ago
13:32
FergusL
I could volunteer for this task
13:32
Bertl
if you like, give it a try
13:33
FergusL
but I thought there might be more exciting things to do right now, to help
13:35
Bertl
feel free to pick something more exciting :)
13:36
Bertl
in case somebody wonders: 'dd bs=256 skip=98303 if=<file.raw16>' will extract the sensor registers
13:37
FergusL
thanks
13:38
FergusL
seek(width*height*2,0) and then read(256) should do the same in python on the file
13:39
Bertl
seek is always a bad idea, because it requires a file
13:39
Bertl
i.e. doesn't work the unix way with pipes
13:39
FergusL
isn't it a file ?
13:39
FergusL
yes, doesn't work with pipes, unless it's wrapped
13:39
Bertl
it may be a file, but it might as well come from a pipe
13:40
Bertl
so you would need to create a temporary file which is ugly and unneccesary
13:40
Bertl
change the seek to a read and you're fine :)

FergusL: does the padding you mentioned only apply to the .raw16 files?
15:41
intracube
ie 12bit data padded to 16bit?
15:41
intracube
or are the 8bit variants padded somehow
15:42
Bertl
yep, the lower 4 bits on raw16 are zeroes
15:42
Bertl
i.e. the 4 LSBs
15:42
intracube
ok
15:43
intracube
and the bits are just truncated to fit the .raw8 format?
15:44
Bertl
yup, basically the 8 MSBs are the .raw8
15:44
intracube
ah cool
15:44
intracube
thanks Bertl
