To make the process of creating a board for that easier, I'll design a baseboard for the Artix 7 with gigabit transceivers module from Trenz that has 2x SDI in, 2x SDI out and the required clocking circuitry. When SDI works on those (tested with one of the proprietary cores), I'll design the AXIOM module containing an Artix 7 and the SDI stuff.

making a custom base board with the sdi chips is cheaper and since the final design will also use those chips, that's imho a better way

hm, yeah, i somehow thought that this was clear from the email, but yeah, that wasn't really clear when you don't know the changed plan :/

before september i'll make a base board for the trenz module that has 2x sdi in and 2x sdi out (no sdi sfp involved) and test it with a commmercial sdi core to make sure the hardware works. then i'll design a custom board for the dual axiom connector with an artix7 fpga and the sdi chips and rework/redisign the axiom-tofe adapter board

I would also like for this software to work with stuff people can buy too, so that even if expensive people can buy the parts and replicate having a working board

you mean with a widely available fpga board with some really expensive sdi fmc board? sure that will also work

There are lots of FMC based options - they are quite expensive but many people of the interested will also have half the parts already....
