Today we'll do a special edition of our IRC meeting ... first because it will be the last before GSoC 2018 ends and then we want to recapture what was done during GSoC and figure out what we can change in the future
17:01
nmdis199-
That sounds great :)

I've opened all the final GSoC project proposals you (the students) submitted as well as the task descriptions to each of the selected tasks
17:03

lets still do the run where everone gets a chance to speak/report one after the other

se6astian
please pm me now for reporting
17:06
se6astian
nmdis199-: please go ahead
17:06
nmdis199-
Alright!
17:07
nmdis199-
So, most of my tasks were finished last week, I talked to alex about it and started documenting and creating github.io repo
17:07
nmdis199-
This week, I just cleaned my directories on beta, cleaned/added anything which was left in source code or documentation.
17:07
nmdis199-
All tools which were promised in timelines are ready and working on beta, the test result images are uploaded in doc, I have added link to source code and documentation here -> nmdis1999.github.io
17:08
nmdis199-
I've got the results checked, and I think I'm ready to submit evaluation today.
17:08
nmdis199-
That's all
17:08
se6astian
great, thanks
17:08
se6astian
lets see if anyone else is arround?
17:09
se6astian
supragya?
17:09
Bertl
nmdis199-: thanks, so looking at the submitted proposal, I see ...
17:09
supragyaraj
Well, I have submitted the final eval yesterday
17:09
se6astian
ArunM: ?
17:09
supragyaraj
g3gg0 checked up on me yesterday, and I updated the final work product
17:09
se6astian
rahul__: ?
17:09
Bertl
nmdis199-: image cropping, extension of the cmv_hist3 tool, etc?
17:10
Bertl
nmdis199-: what of those parts were implemented?
17:10
supragyaraj
Also, g3gg0 gave a green light to me before me submitting the final eval... So that's it I guess
17:10
nmdis199-
I made tool histogram.c instead (recommended by you) instead which was addition, I did suggested the image cropping algo in first month if I remember correctly.
17:11
nmdis199-
But later on we started working on reading/writing tool
17:11
se6astian
ymc98: ?
17:11
nmdis199-
I think I mentioned the addition task on nmdis1999.github.io about reading/writing into memory etc
17:11
ymc98

17:12

nmdis199-: so, short overview what 'new' tools are available now and what the plans for the future are maybe?

basically now we have histogram, waveform (rgb parade) and vectorscope tool which are working on 12-bit raw data values.
17:13
nmdis199-
I've talked about adding some better features in waveform and vectorscope tools, will talk to alex again soon
17:13
alexML
nmdis199-: any sample images since last week?
17:13
rahul__
hello everyone
17:13
nmdis199-
added everything in documentation @alexML
17:13
nmdis199-
sebastian checked them :)
17:14
Bertl
okay, thanks
17:14
nmdis199-
:)
17:14
Bertl
17:14
nmdis199-
I wanted to ask alex, that he worked on similar kind of tools in magic latern, if I remember our discussion, I'd like to read his codes and work and improve the current tool
17:15
nmdis199-
so we can basically extend it maybe.
17:15
alexML
I only see some plain histograms (i.e. no RGB) and some scatter dots labeled as "waveform" and "vectorscope", i.e. not exactly what I'd see on a camera screen
17:15
alexML
please compare with the initial proposal
17:16
se6astian
nmdis199-: sebastian checked them <- lets more call it, "I provided some feedback and improvement suggestions"
17:16
nmdis199-
yes, right.
17:16
Bertl
nmdis199-: IIRC, you are planning to spend some extra time on those tools in the forseeable future, right?
17:17
nmdis199-
yes, definitely .

17:19
Bertl
okay, so supragyaraj, you want to tell us something about what you did during GSoC and what the new features are now?
17:20
Bertl
ArunM: would also like to know the current status ...
17:20
supragyaraj
So, during GSoC, there were 2-3 different things we achieved
17:21
Bertl
ymc98: same goes for you ...
17:21
supragyaraj
First, we created the way with which we will encapsulate all the meta and video frames and discussed the pathway for that
17:21
supragyaraj
also, some discussion went into what beta will have to do... in order to record mlv
17:22
supragyaraj
then, we created an emulation of the recording end and tested it's speed etc
17:22
tcsc27
joined the channel
17:22
supragyaraj
after this, some time went into configuring the mlv structures to make it more suitable for beta
17:23
supragyaraj
this means, we changed a few values, added a PLR block (theoretically), changed the color matrix etc
17:23
supragyaraj
Finally, we shifted to the conversion from MLV to CDNG... tinkered around with MLVFS and MLV_DUMP
17:23
tcsc27
left the channel
17:24
supragyaraj
we added a linearization table in order to affect the CDNG according to the theoretical PLR block that we proposed
17:24
supragyaraj
after this, all of this was packaged into single repo, with added scripts for anyone to run them
17:24
supragyaraj
this is the final work product
17:25
supragyaraj
in the last few weeks, I went back to look at other formats that we originally had taken into consideration for comparison
17:25
supragyaraj
and documented those....
17:25
supragyaraj
while they are effective... eg ProRes or Cineform, they need quite a bit of changes to beta in order to incorporate
17:26
supragyaraj
MLV was still the most straightforward solution we can get
17:26
supragyaraj
The GSoC project ends here... but still requires future work
17:26
supragyaraj
basically on 2 domains:
17:27
supragyaraj
1. Implement this system into beta... so that recording end can be joined to it and "really work"
17:27
supragyaraj
2. change current mlvfs/mlv_dump code in order to make PLR changes and add beta's color matrix among other things
17:28
Bertl
do you plan to continue working on those after GSoC?
17:28
supragyaraj
I plan to... yes..
17:28
Bertl
excellent! thanks
17:28
se6astian
great to hear! :D
17:28
supragyaraj
But the project that I plan to take over sooner than that would be opencine's frameserver
17:28
se6astian
also a great thing!
17:28
supragyaraj
that I had proposed... BAndiT is working on it now
17:29
Bertl
rahul__: I think you're up next
17:29
rahul__
ok
17:30
se6astian
yes please rahul__ go ahead
17:33
Bertl
rahul__: ?
17:33
rahul__
so, I had finished my IP design as well as successful simulations in the first two months. the last month was trying to place the IP in the beta pipeline, then the last week I visited the office in Vienna to expedite the work. after discussions with Bertl, I placed the IP in the output pipeline, (just after the frame reader) but after some experiments it shows that the pipeline was not able to handle delays (if the IP is
17:33
rahul__
placed in that position) So I am trying to place the IP now in the TMDS encoding unit itself and hope that the data streams smoothly from my pipelie
17:33
rahul__
but I am not sure wether this would be possible by today
17:34
Bertl
well, we don't know about the delays yet :)
17:34
ymc98
Hello everyone. I made a blog post describing the project, my progress and what's left to be completed. Here's a link : https://ymc98472005768.wordpress.com. Made few changes in the design for transceivers for MachXO2. With these changes incorporated, there isn't any requirement of having a 10 bit dummy data between packets for the serialization and deserialization. Also, the documentation to my code can be found here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r7
17:34
rahul__
so I will be submitting my packged IP as well as the simulation code and results for the final evaluation,
17:35
rahul__
I will also be submiting
17:35
rahul__
the beta code which incorporates my IP in the planned position
17:35
rahul__
the presentattion as well as report will be on my github link soon today
17:35
Bertl
ymc98: I know you haven't participated in many IRC meetings but the proper approach is to notify se6astian that you want to report and he will schedule your report
17:36
ymc98
Sorry. It's an accident
17:36
rahul__
so, I will be in touch with Bertl for sucessful working on beta
17:37
Bertl
rahul__: checking with the original proposal, it looks like you are in Week 10 of your plans ...
17:37
Bertl
what were the main (unexpected) problems you encountered?
17:38
rahul__
yes, week 10 to 12 was to implement in the beta...but its not working properly as you know,,,, that was the main reason i came personally to vienna
17:39
rahul__
the main problem was not with the IP but understanding the pipeline(still struggling) as the dumentations were limited, so I tried many ways to incorporate the IP in the pipeline(as we have many discussions)
17:39
se6astian
thanks rahul__
17:39
se6astian
so ymc98 your turn now!
17:39
Bertl
rahul__: integrating new code into existing designs is always tricky
17:39
rahul__
but the timing flow of the information was the main issue
17:40
Bertl
okay, do you plan to continue working on this after GSoC?
17:40
rahul__
surely
17:40
Bertl
glad to hear!
17:40
rahul__
I want to see my IP working on the screen, bot just in simulations
17:40
rahul__
also as we had discussed
17:40
rahul__
I want to work with partial reconfigurations
17:41
se6astian
about that: I installed a HDMI to USB capture card in the remote beta setup today
17:41
Bertl
yes, sounds good to me
17:41
se6astian
we still need to get it to work under linux though
17:41
Bertl
ymc98: okay, your turn finally :)
17:41
ymc98
Sorry for the interruption before. As i mentioned previously I made a blog post describing the project, my progress and what's left to be completed. Here's a link : https://ymc98472005768.wordpress.com. Made few changes in the design of transceivers for MachXO2. With these changes incorporated, there isn't any requirement of having a 10 bit data gap between packets for the serialization and deserialization. Also, the documentation to my code can be found he
17:43
ymc98
Working on synchronizer circuits to resolve issues of clock domain crossing. That's all.
17:43
Bertl
so, what is working as of today?
17:43
supragyaraj
An update ymc98, kindly use this link -> https://ymc98472005768.wordpress.com/2018/08/07/gsoc_project_summary/ instead of https://ymc98472005768.wordpress.com when submitting to google. Also https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r7 is an invalid link resulting in 404.
17:44
ymc98
SERDES transceivers for zynq and machxo2
17:44
ymc98
Are working
17:45
Bertl
okay, that's week 3 in your final proposal
17:45
Bertl
did you succeed in having a working communication between Zynq and MachXO2?
17:46
ymc98
Not yet. Working on it.
17:47
Bertl
okay, so I take it you plan to continue working on this after GSoC, yes?
17:47
ymc98
That's a yes
17:48
ymc98
I plan to fully completed the project
17:48
Bertl
good to hear!
17:48
se6astian
wonderful!
17:48
Bertl
so, unless I miscounted, we had four reports, right?
17:49
BAndiT1983
TofuLynx is on vacation
17:49
se6astian
Tofulynx is missing and ArunM
17:49
Bertl
ArunM: care to say a few words?
17:49
BAndiT1983
thought he would return today, as he said 10th to 13th
17:49
se6astian
BAndiT1983: can you give a quick summary of Tofulynx latest progress?
17:50
BAndiT1983
give me a sec
17:50
BAndiT1983
notified him about meeting, as i'Ve got a PM through lab from him
17:51
BAndiT1983
but overall we have a very good progress, which still needs evaluations, but this relies on the architecture etc.
17:51
Bertl
okay, so let's use the time to ask for feedback from the students
17:51
BAndiT1983
Claudio has implemented and improved plain debayer processors, also ones in openmp and also fixed parallelization problems there
17:51
supragyaraj
Btw, are final evals organizations' evaluations or mentor's evaluation of the student? I'm just curious.
17:52
BAndiT1983
no email from google so far, probably it's org related
17:53
BAndiT1983
Claudio cannot attend, he ist still 45mins away from home
17:53
Bertl
nmdis199-: supragyaraj: rahul__: ymc98: what could be improved for next years GSoC?
17:53
nmdis199-
shall I say ?
17:54
Bertl
sure, that's why I ask :)
17:55
Bertl
note that this will not influence your evaluation, but I guess that should be clear by now :)
17:55
nmdis199-
I think I loved the challenge part (before applying), adding familiarity with linux in project/task description could be helpful. I really liked the weekly meetings, so that should definitely stay :)
17:55
se6astian
Final evaluations should be mentor evaluations like the previous evaluation stages, they start after the deadline tomorrow and mentors have one week to complete them
17:56
nmdis199-
Overall I really enjoyed working here, I learned a lot. This being my first project had a really positive impact on me :)
17:56
se6astian
great to hear, linux knowledge and meetings duely noted
17:57
rahul__
As my experience, I really liked the way mentors responded and helped all along the way, The only issue that I faced (may not be the same for the rest) is the lack of detailed documentation of the code as most of the productive time went into that, so if the organisation could support the code base with proper documentation, then that would be really helpful for both the next lot of students as well the organisation, and as I
17:57
rahul__
had suggested in Vienna, I am willing to help for that cause as most of the slides in my presentation describes/ documents the all the signals involved in the output beta pipeline.
17:58
supragyaraj
Well, i found this with magic lantern too....
17:58
nmdis199-
if I can help in documentation, I'll be willing to.
17:59
supragyaraj
code was not in one place... maybe I am wrong too...
17:59
Bertl
documentation in FOSS/OH is ofter bad, unless there are people with passion for documentation :)
17:59
supragyaraj
but could not find a central place to find my references
17:59
Bertl
that's not an excuse, that is just stating a fact
17:59
supragyaraj
Bertl: Like RexOrCine :)
17:59
supragyaraj
he said he is passionate about documentations etc :)
18:00
Bertl
yes, the main problem is that most folks who code/build do not want to spend time on documentation and those who like documenting often do not have the insight required ... it needs a lot of effort to make it happen :)
18:01
BAndiT1983
or your manager tells you to create one, but still nobody reads it and makes mistakes in code ;)
18:01
Bertl
that said, documentation is very important and I'm happy to hear that you want to help out there
18:01

anything else you'd like to see improved in the future?
18:02
nmdis199-
if that can make students understand stuff easily, it makes sense to help maintain them :) Maybe we (students) can help in it.
18:03
klx``18

18:03
supragyaraj
Genuinely, I don't think we can practically improve anywhere
18:03
supragyaraj
"practically", not talking about utopian world
18:03
se6astian
you can participate a second year by the way :)
18:04
rahul__
yes, surely I think we GSOC students can contribute to this organisation in a big way like that after the GSOC ends....
18:04
supragyaraj
or can help out others who take up the project too. ;)
18:04
rahul__
by preparing a well documented code base
18:04
rahul__
that could be really helpful for the future
18:05
BAndiT1983
which kind of code docs would be suitable?
18:05
supragyaraj
I would say, documentation to a point is required, but after that, overdocumentation is bad for code changes etc
18:05
Bertl
@students: okay then, thanks for the feedback and hope to see you all around in the future :)
18:05
nmdis199-
:)
18:06
rahul__
:)
18:06
BAndiT1983
doxygen is adds too much code, just my opinion, if we can find something which parses the code from outside and creates docs, this would be better
18:06
BAndiT1983
*doxygen adds
18:07
Bertl
ArunM: if you join later for whatever reason, please do not hesitate to contact us and/or give a short report
18:07
supragyaraj
Btw, where can we get hold of AXIOM merchs? those tees look awesome ;)
18:07
nmdis199-
they do indeed :)
18:07
se6astian
ah good idea
18:08
se6astian
because we are almost out of the standard sized ones
18:08
se6astian
only a few very small or very large ones left
18:08
se6astian
I will seek to get new ones produced
18:08
nmdis199-
very small would work for me :P
18:08
se6astian
will take a bit of time though
18:08
se6astian
great :D
18:08

Thanks! excited for tee xD
18:09

I think we will manage to send you some other stuff as well, like stickers and such ...
18:09
supragyaraj
so, we getting it? XD...
18:09
BAndiT1983
will the t-shirt print layouts be open-sourced? ;)
18:09
nmdis199-
WOW, Bertl, that's bonus!
18:09
se6astian
you will get it :)
18:09
se6astian
but dont expect it too soon
18:09

Bertl: you said what we just wanted to say.... :)
18:10

18:10

18:10

Thank you Apertus for giving such an opportunity , It was really pleasure working with you, I hope the the organisation meets its aims in the future. and yes Vienna was lovely!
18:11

also I hope sabestian will make a better curry when we meet next time :P
18:11

Thank you, se6astian!
18:11
