did you collect the thoughts/requirements somewhere?

the remote needs to be able to send commands to the camera to set sensor/image parameters

but also commands to capture and store a still image

in the future also to start/stop recording (eg. over USB3)

that could be current sensor parameters like exposure time, gain, etc.

free space remaining for capturing still images

in addition to that, there was the plan to have 'per remote' configurations for the camera

there is also the plan to extend the remote with modules/addons, which probably should be identified/reported to the camera

for the low level communication a bidirectional 'serial' interface is probably the best choice, as it is already available now and also quite easy to do over USB (via CDC)

Unique identifiers over network sounds bad, I'd rather have serial number and config+actual identifier on SD-card

yes, but that would make it USB specific which we probably want to avoid to be able to use rs232 or rs485 as well
