troy_s_, rexbron: so, any clues from the IT8 chart yet?
23:35
rexbron
Bertl: sorry, haven't had the chance to look at it
23:35
rexbron
I've got a music video I'm pulling focus on tomorrow. First time I've ever worked with IR
23:36
Bertl
no problem, I was just curious
03:56
Bertl
off to bed now ... have a good one everyone!

Bertl: I am on location in Florida so I can't do any computer work thanks to the lack of a computer.

hi Bertl :)
11:54
intracube
what's new in the land of Apertus?
11:54
Bertl
depends, what is your status? :)
11:55
intracube
I haven't been following things for a few months.
11:55
Bertl
then there are many new things, I guess ...
11:55
intracube
any news on the camera hardware and development?
11:56
Bertl
https://www.apertus.org/alpha_prototype
11:57
intracube
why aren't the posts on that page listed newest at the top!
11:58
intracube
I saw that page and thought nothing had been added since Feb
11:58
Bertl
yeah, well ...

are there any more samples other than this: https://www.apertus.org/sites/default/files/colors_500ms_composed_0.jpg

Bertl
http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/AXIOM/RAW/
12:05
intracube
awesome, thanks :)
12:05
Bertl
but note: it's a known broken sensor and we have no proper setup yet
12:05
intracube
do you know the cause of the faint cross-hatching?
12:06
Bertl
i.e. prototype cannot be user like a camera ATM, but be are getting there
12:06
Bertl
you mean the horizontal and vertical stripes?
12:06
intracube
yep. most visible in the coloured stripes
12:06
intracube
de-bayering?
12:07
Bertl
no, I think it is missing calibration of columns and rows
12:08
intracube
ah ok
12:09
Bertl
but maybe it is something else, we don't really know yet
12:09
Bertl
latest image is the IT8 one
12:09
intracube
I'm really impressed by the sharpness
12:09
Bertl
and we are not even able to focus properly yet
12:09
intracube
I'm thinking about getting a Nikon D610. it looks a great DSLR but the video is obviously poor by comparison to the axiom
12:10
Bertl
it takes about 15 seconds to transfer the image via ethernet
12:10
Bertl
so imagine getting the focus right with 15second delays between each image :)
12:19
Sasha_C
Might a video out feed to monitor / viewfinder screen at lower resolutions be possible, for previewing and focusing?
12:20
Bertl
we are working on HDMI out, so yes, that will happen :)
12:20
Sasha_C
So the 15 second delay comes into effect when recording a raw image at 4K res, over ethernet?
12:21
Bertl
yes, the transfer from memory and over thernet atm
12:21
Bertl
recording the image to memory only takes a fraction of a second
12:22
Bertl
i.e. we could record a few images (4-5) at probably 40FPS at full resolution (4096x3072)
12:23
Sasha_C
you mean the sensor could capture 40FPS, but out of all those frames, only 4-5 could be captured with the current setup?
12:24
Bertl
yes, the sensor can do much more than 40FPS, but the interface to the FPGA currently limits us to half of the possible performance, and the memory on the ZedBoard limits us to a few frames
12:24
intracube
is it still the case that the prototype will read off a windowed 16:9 area of the sensor?
12:25
Bertl
maybe, we'll se what we do once we get there
12:25
Bertl
we will definitely have to use the HDMI out for sequences
12:26
Bertl
which limits us to 1080p or so
12:26
Sasha_C
Bertl, does this mean that the zedboard won't be viable for high-speed capture on the final AXIOM?
12:26
intracube
I know this is probably hard to answer right now, but should the final hardware be able to read off the entire sensor (4:3)?
12:26
Bertl
Sasha_C: the zedboard won't be near the final AXIOM :)
12:26
intracube
even if it's not full (4K) resolution
12:27
Bertl
the AXIOM (not alpha prototype) will do 4K raw at 150 FPS or so
12:28
Bertl
(given that you have sufficient illumination that is)
12:28
Sasha_C
Yeah, that's what I thought. But what hardware will replace the zedboard?
12:28
Bertl
once the alpha prototype is finished and the crowdfunding successful, we will start building our own AXIOM prototype (custom hardware replacing the zedboard)
12:29
Sasha_C
I.C
12:29
Sasha_C
i guess that wasn't made too clear. I thought there was the possibility to reuse the zedboard in the final AXIOM unit
12:30
Bertl
nah, the zedboard has a number of disadvantages for AXIOM
12:30
Bertl
but it is a good starting point for the alpha prototype
12:30
Bertl
(otherwise we wouldn't be where we are now :)
12:31
Sasha_C
yeah, so true :)
12:32
Sasha_C
Hey, off topic... This chat room is going to get pretty damn crowded tomorrow night (or afternoon, depending on your location)?
12:33
Bertl
yes, afternoon here
12:35
Sasha_C
I only hope there's a reasonable level of civility and that everyone displays some kind of civility
12:35
Sasha_C
oops, that doesn't make sense (I'm getting tired
12:36
Sasha_C
I meant to say, I hope that with many people on here, everyone takes the time to listen to what others have to say without hijacking the meeting's agenda
12:38
Bertl
well, we'll see, if it gets too crowded/confusing, we can always switch to voice/invitation
12:39
Bertl
(voice means a moderated channel)
12:39
Sasha_C
right
12:42
Sasha_C
What are your thoughts regarding the hardware that will have to be built to replace the zedboard in the final AXIOM? Can you describe the specs that will be required for, say, shooting 4k raw at 100FPS?
12:43
Bertl
well, we will need something with gigabit tranceivers for that to work, like the zynq-7030 for example
12:43
Bertl
and we probably want to have some ram available to the FPGA fabric for buffering
12:46
Sasha_C
Is the estimated crowd-funding target still at around 150,000 euros?
12:48
Bertl
we haven't done a serious calculation yet, we'll do that when we have some clues when the prototype is finished
12:48
Sasha_C
ok, thanks for the update
12:49
Bertl
