My opinion is to not think much about "competition", but propose what you can do best on those projects.

gsoccer, it would be better if you get accustomed to the project's codebase on which you are going to propose, install them, run them, understand them... and then make you decisions maybe :)

"they are cumbersome for review period" / "Bertl would like it but not google" - Google doc is easier for real-time co-op, and it'll likely be me that checks for errors. In that sense it's nice for the applicant to see what's being corrected, if anything.

gsoccer: "how many students are you looking to take this coming GSOC 2018?" It's Google who decides this. Last year we got three. It would be nice to get at least the same this year.
