Hello everyone,
07:02
georgevdl
I would like to improve my embedded systems skills (such as VHDL and/or C/C++) and am thinking of learning through contributing to an open-source project, in a way similar to GSoC. I was amazed when I came across your project as not only do I like embedded devices but I also happen to own a Sony full-frame camera and a couple of E-mount lenses
07:02

since landscape photography is one of my hobbies. I could do this in my free time (which is not a lot) and was wondering if anyone is willing to mentor me

georgevdl: hey, welcome :)
11:37
anuejn
we did not do GSoC last year and I would say it is very unsure if we will do it again
11:37
anuejn
but If you want to work on something specific, I am sure, that there are persons that would mentor you
11:38
anuejn
there is a lot of things that could be improved always
11:39
anuejn
I think you have to come up with an idea what you want to do / improve
11:40
anuejn
then we can see who has time / capacity to answer your questions :)

Thank you anuejn,

1) What is a good way to familiarize myself with the project?
11:56
georgevdl
I assume that checking out https://github.com/apertus-open-source-cinema/axiom-firmware is a good starting point?
11:56
georgevdl
1) Is there an indicative list of ideas?
11:59
anuejn
depends on what you want to do
12:00
anuejn
the firmware is a rough (currently more best effort) collection of what runs on the camera
12:00
anuejn
but there are also related things that are not in there
12:01
anuejn
also most of the time it is easier to get started with something somewhat self-contained that is then later integrated
12:01
anuejn
(for example lens mounts or something similiar)
12:01
anuejn
(since you mentioned it)

When it comes to lens mounts, do you mean something like communicating with the lens (eg for autofocus)?

anuejn
yes
13:33
anuejn
but that was only one example of a thing that could be very seperate

hey georgevdl!
15:29
Bertl
you might also want to check https://lab.apertus.org/ (outdated/unmaintained) for ideas
15:30
Bertl
but as anuejn said, double check with folks here before you start to avoid going in a direction which doesn't make sense anymore (for whatever reason)
15:46
georgevdl
thanks Bertl, I will check it out

MEETING TIME!
16:00
Bertl
who is around and has something to report?
16:01
Bertl
se6astian is somewhere on the countryside and still a little under the weather
16:02
Bertl
on my side, there has been some preparations to include back the new ICSP register interface into our main gateware which will allow to reprogram the newer power controller on the latest power boards as well as the existing PICs on the mainboard without loading special gateware
16:03
Bertl
the recently added data island fixes as well as the sync inversion and clock configuration changes are currently being tested (by se6astian) and should soon make their way into recent firmware
16:04
Bertl
other than that, nothing new to report from my side.

MEETING CONCLUDED!
16:15
anuejn
is here
16:15
anuejn
whoopsie, that was a little late then
16:16
anuejn
so from my side:
16:16
anuejn
vup and me had a nice session, where we investigated row noise removal and selected a path forward
16:16
anuejn
we also started implementing it in the recorder, but that is not done yet
16:17
anuejn
thats it from my side :)
16:17
Bertl
thanks!
