intracube
too quiet in here
19:56
dmj_nova
been busy the last couple weeks myself
19:57
intracube
dmj_nova: are you part of the Axiom team?
19:57
dmj_nova
as of recently
19:57
intracube
aha, you've been drafted :)
19:57
dmj_nova
got a zedboard :)
19:59
intracube
nice - so you're doing some hardware design/research I guess?
20:00
intracube
have you been designated a specific job?
20:00
intracub
saw some of the initial tests with the menus/LCD display
20:03
dmj_nova
was going to be doing HDMI stuff until Bertl beat me to it :)
20:04
dmj_nova
I think I'll start building a simulated sensor once I finish moving and get settled in.
20:05
intracube
HDMI is just for monitor preview, right? ISTR reading main video out will be HD-SDI
20:06
dmj_nova
yes
20:06
intracube
dmj_nova: simulated sensor will create colourbars or something similar?
20:06
dmj_nova
but the prototype will use HDMI exclusively
20:06
dmj_nova
well, whatever pattern it should simulate the output format of the sensor
20:06
intracube
that would be a nice feature for the camera to have actually - ability to output a few test charts to make sure monitors are reasonably calibrated
20:07
intracube
(final camera, I should add)
20:07
dmj_nova
Mostly so that people can develop components without a real sensor attached
20:07
intracube
yup
20:11
intracub
is excited by the goals of this project
20:12
intracube
it's really annoying being drip-fed features by most commercial camera makers while they lock down the firmware to try and prevent modification
20:13
intracube
variable aspect ratio and frame rate are the two biggest interests for me
20:17
dmj_nova
intracube: yeah, that would be really useful
20:17
dmj_nova
though at the least Canon has been non-obstructive (7D aside) when it comes to firmward
20:17
intracube
so far, anyway :)
20:17
dmj_nova
they still drip feed features though
20:18
dmj_nova
just giving credit where it's due
20:18
dmj_nova
if they change, I have a feeling a lot of people will be less enthusiastic about their cameras
20:18
intracube
I'd still be a bit wary about investing in Canon hardware + magic lantern
20:19
intracube
if they decide to block newer camera models from having their firmware modded
20:21
dmj_nova
Right, which is a big reason I like Apertus
20:21
dmj_nova
That said, I do own and love using Canon DSLRs for video.
20:21
intracube
of course they can't break a camera that's already been modified but investing thousands in lenses and hoping that future cameras be moddable (is that a word?) is quite a big 'if'
20:22
dmj_nova
They have enabled me to shoot truly cinematic footage.
20:22
dmj_nova
Which I was never able to do before.
20:22
intracube
unfortunately I've invested in Nikon glass over the years so it's not as easy to change to Canon
20:22
dmj_nova
I didn't have any glass before my 60D
20:22
intracube
I wish Nikon would catch up to Canon's video quality. they always seem to lag behind :/
20:23
dmj_nova
yeah, Canon was the first one to really get what pro video needed
20:23
intracube
then they go and do dumb things like release the D600 which has a reduced image on the HDMI output (black border all around)
20:23
intracube
I think there's a firmware update for that now. only took them a year....
20:23
dmj_nova
well, older Canon models have the same HDMI issue there
20:24
intracube
despite advertising the D600 as having 'clean video out'
20:24
dmj_nova
wasn't until a firmware update on the 5Dmkiii that they got it right

Bertl
intracube: I don't see a problem with arbitrary framerates, up to the theoretical limit of 150 frames per second
20:59
Bertl
but the aspect ratio is somewhat fixed by the sensor, of course you can trim it down to whatever you like

Bertl: there was a page on the Axiom site that said the final camera could set a user definable sensor recording area

21:42
intracube
and very low frame-rates would be very nice for timelapse
21:44
Bertl
as I said, you can always trim the sensor data down, so yes, that's correct
21:44
Bertl
and there is no problem with arbitrary framerates up to the limit of the sensor
21:51
intracube
